Hell On Wheels : Mumford & Sons – As Brothers We Will Stand

Lorsque je fais ma séquence sur les Natives avec mes 3èmes, je leur montre quelques extraits de la série Hell on Wheels.

Cela leur montre les conditions de vie de l’époque, les tenues vestimentaires, le racisme et l’intolérance… bref, c’est très instructif et cela les fait parler.

Cette scène en particulier les touche beaucoup : il s’agit de la scène de l’épisode 1×09 où les Natives se font massacrer par les hommes du régiment :

La musique de Mumford & Sons est superbe et contraste avec la violence des images.

Vieilles Charrues 2013 : Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Cette année, je suis allé au festival des Vieilles Charrues avec mon père. La dernière fois, c’était en 2008 avec ma soeur.

Neil Young

Nous étions 65.000 festivaliers sur la prairie de Kerampuilh, plus précisément sur la scène Glenmor, pour écouter Neil Young and Crazy Horse, son groupe privilégié depuis 1969.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, c’est un folk rugueux, terriblement addictif, baigné de guitares orageuses, ou surnage une voix à la fois haut perchée et nasillarde, reconnaissable entre mille.

Songwriter et guitariste d’exception, le Loner livre sur scène un folk rock mâtiné à la fois de country et de grunge avec la même passion, la même envie qu’autrefois, à coups de guitares saturées et de riffs lancinants.

Le rock furieusement électrique de la formation continue de surprendre ceux qui ne connaissent du sexagénaire que son versant paisible, révélé sur Harvest (1972), plus gros succès de sa carrière.

Guitariste puissant et inventif, Neil sculpte le son dans un déluge de saturation et de larsens pendant une bonne heure avant de livrer Heart of Gold, son plus gros tube, guitare sèche en bandoulière et harmonica autour du cou :

Souriant et complice avec ses musiciens, Neil Young n’a pas besoin de discourir pour séduire le public.

Branches – To the Desert

Branches est un groupe folk-rock californien qui s’est formé en 2010, qui se rapproche de Mumford & Sons. Leur dernier album, Thou Art The Dream, est teint de banjo festif et d’images vives.

City and Colour – Of Space And Time

City and Colour est un projet parallèle de musique acoustique fondé par Dallas Green, guitariste et chanteur du groupe post-hardcore canadien Alexisonfire.

Le nom “City and Colour” (Ville et Couleur) vient de son propre nom: Dallas et Green (Vert). Son raisonnement pour l’utilisation de ce nom est qu’il était mal à l’aise de publier l’album sous le nom de Dallas Green.

La voix au tout début me fait penser à une autre chanson mais je ne retrouve plus laquelle. J’ai l’impression d’avoir entendu ça quand j’étais petit. Anyone?

Strand of Oaks, un groupe de Philadelphie mené par Timothy Showalter, a sorti l’album Dark Shores l’année dernière.

C’est un album mélancolique, à moitié dans la science-fiction et dans l’Americana, une combinaison étrange mais qui fonctionne bien avec les images invoquées dans les chansons.

L’un des titres, Satellite Moon, est un morceau up-tempo, sombre et groovy à la fois :

Andy Shauf – I’m Not Falling Asleep

Andy Shauf est un musicien multi-instrumentaliste canadien, élevé dans la “prairie”. Il joue tous les instruments : guitares, piano, clarinette et cordes et enregistre dans le sous-sol de ses parents.

Voici I’m Not Falling Asleep:

Il est difficile de ne pas le comparer à Elliot Smith, surtout avec sa manière de crooner qui s’adapte très bien aux mélodies pop et aux morceaux de folk acoustique plutôt sombres.

On pourra aussi le rapprocher d’Andrew Bird : on alterne entre des mélodies folks old-school et de la pop orchestrale colorée et expansive.

I’m Not Falling Asleep est basée sur un piano groggy et des explosions de cuivres sombres, qui changent de ton tout au long du morceau et sont responsables de la variation du morceau.

De la musique contemplative en somme. Plus de morceaux ici.

Port St. Willow – Soft Light Rush (ii)

Nick Principe, connu sous le nom de Port St. Willow, vient de sortir un morceau expérimental de 6 minutes intitulé “Soft Light Rush (ii)” qui mélange folk, rock et électro.

Pas mal d’instruments dans ce morceau : quelques cuivres, quelques accords de guitare, un peu de xylophone. Et pourtant, ce n’est pas surchargé, chaque instrument a la place de s’exprimer.

Une invitation mélancolique à la rêverie en somme.

Ish Marquez – I Perceive Things

Ish Marquez vient du Bronx et fait partie de la scène anti-folk, qui est un sous-genre musical du punk, qui mêle des éléments de punk rock et de musique folk américaine. L’anti-folk a fait son apparition au milieu des années 1980 à New York.

Le répertoire d’Ish Marquez est assez éclectique mais j’aime beaucoup I Perceive Things :

Andrew Bird – Three White Horses

Andrew Wegman Bird (né en 1973) est une auteur-compositeur multi-instrumentaliste américain qui vient de Chicago.

Son originalité est servie par l’utilisation d’instruments comme le violon et le glockenspiel.

Enfin lors de ses concerts, il utilise l’oversampling pour jouer par-dessus ses propres boucles, ce qui lui offre un son plus proche du groupe de rock que de l’artiste solo :

Entre jazz, folk, rock et soul, il impose un univers riche, sobre et très personnel.

Cela risque de tourner en boucle sur les radios.
