Greta Van Fleet est un groupe de rock américain, originaire de Frankenmuth, dans le Michigan.

Il est formé en 2012, par les frères Josh Kiszka, Jake Kiszka, Sam Kiszka et Kyle Hauck (remplacé par Danny Wagner en 2013).

Il suffit d’écouter quelques titres comme Safari Song :

et vous allez immédiatement trouver leurs sources d’inspiration et leurs influences classic rock millésimées !

Une voix à la Robert Plant, des riffs lourds comme les morceaux de Led Zeppelin I, des break de batteries à la John Bonham… il est difficile de ne pas y voir un hommage aux années 60 et 70.

Même Robert Plant les a remarqué :

“There’s a band in Detroit called Greta Van Fleet. They are Led Zeppelin I,” Plant told Loudwire. “Beautiful little singer, I hate him! He borrowed [his voice] from somebody I know very well, but what are you going to do? At least he’s got a bit of style, because he’s said he based his whole style on Aerosmith [eye roll].”

Greta Van Fleet revendique ses influences et Jake est d’accord avec Robert Plant :

“We have certain debut records that are like benchmarks to us—Van Halen’s first record, Zeppelin’s first, even the Black Crowes’ Shake Your Money Maker. Those records really seemed to sum up each band so well. Those albums are like the gold standard, and they give us something to shoot for. It’s like, ‘Can we be that good?’”

Même l’alien et guitar-hero Joe Satriani a déclaré sur NJ Arts être devenu fan de Greta Van Fleet quasi-immédiatement :

“I’ve been listening to this young band, Greta Van Fleet, and I’m really enjoying that exuberance that I’m hearing. When I first heard them, I sent their album to all my friends that were in my high-school band. We’re still good friends and we stay in touch and, I swear, that’s what we were trying to do when we were 15 years old.

We were just trying to be like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and The Stones, but these guys are really good at it! [Laughs] They have that same kind of… it just sounds like they love music and they love what they’re doing and yeah, I’ve been listening to that quite a bit.”

J’écris cet article en écoutant leur album, intitulé From the Fires et je peux vous dire que si vous aimez Led Zeppelin, vous allez vraiment apprécier cet album.

On est à des années lumières de la musique actuelle et c’est une vraie cure de jouvence pour les oreilles.

Zepparella est un tribute-band de Led Zeppelin entièrement féminin fondé par la batteuse Clementine et composé de Gretchen Menn (guitare), Angeline Saris (basse) et Noelle Doughty (chant).

Zepparella : les membres du groupe

Clementine tourne constamment aux Etats-Unis et en Europe, avec différents projets très divers : Bottom, AC/DShe, The House Of More, The Solid, Francis Bakin, et Stars Turn Me On.

La guitariste Gretchen Menn combine des éléments de classic-rock, rock, progressive, jazz, et metal. Influencée par Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa et Jeff Beck, c’est Jimmy Page qu’elle prend pour modèle et qui la pousse vers la guitare.

Angeline Saris, à la basse, crédite John Paul Jones comme son influence principale et n’hésite pas à chanter pour accompagner la chanteuse Noelle Doughty, qui peut vraiment reprendre la voix de Robert Plant.

Très bon.

Led Zeppelin est – une nouvelle fois – en train de remasteriser ses albums.

Voici Whole Lotta Love, sur l’album Led Zeppelin II, avec une version sans les arrangements habituels et la voix de Robert :

Le clip est une compilation de performances live rares et la chanson fera partie du CD bonus de la version “Limited Edition Super Deluxe” de Led Zeppelin II.

Voici ce qu’a dit Jimmy Page à propos du morceau :

“This version of Whole Lotta Love is the mix down from the night that we recorded it so it doesn’t have any of the overdubs that everyone will be familiar with, because when they hear this they’ll think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s the original’ and all of a sudden they’ll go ‘No, it’s not.’

People who love Led Zeppelin, who listen intently, are going to get so much out of this.”

Voici une magnifique version de “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” par Jimmy Page et Robert Plant, filmée le 10 décembre 1998 à Paris – dans le cadre de la tournée promo de l’album “Walking Into Clarksdale”.

Les deux musiciens de Led Zeppelin partagent alors la scène avec Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour, Radiohead, Shania Twain ou encore Bruce Springsteen, tous réunis pour un concert événement organisé afin de récolter des fonds pour Amnesty International.

Lors de cette soirée, Page et Plant rejouent quelques standards de Led Zeppelin (six chansons au total) – dont notamment cette superbe version de “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”, un titre folk écrit par Anne Bredon et qui avait été popularisé par Joan Baez avant d’être repris magnifié et électrifié sur le premier album éponyme de Led Zeppelin en 1969.

Led Zeppelin a été à l’honneur des 35ème Kennedy Center Honors en cette fin d’année 2012!

Après une introduction de Jack Black (Tenacious D), les Foo Fighters ont joué “Rock and Roll”, Kid Rock “Ramble On”, Lenny Kravitz “Whole Lotta Love”.

Et le final : Ann et Nancy Wilson (Heart), avec Jason Bonham (fils de feu John Bonham) et tout une chorale pour entamer “Stairway To Heaven” :

Les réactions de Plant, Page et Jones sont vraiment excellentes.

J’aime bien le moment quand Jimmy et John bougent leur tête en rythme, ou encore lorsque Robert a la larme à l’oeil. So much win.

Le 8 novembre 1971, Led Zeppelin a offert au monde un cadeau inestimable : le quatrième album studio, qui ne porte pas de titre mais que l’on appelle généralement IV, Four Symbols, The Fourth Album, Untitled, The Runes, The Hermit ou encore ZoSo (par référence aux symboles de Jimi Page).

Et aujourd’hui, cet album mythique fête ses 40 ans.

Led Zeppelin IV est un album qui a été écouté par quasiment tous ceux qui apprécient la musique rock’n’roll. Il touche presque l’universalité et a inspiré nombre d’artistes à travers le monde.

Il a aussi la spécificité d’être spécial pour tous ceux qui l’écoutent : c’est une de ces pierres angulaires qui marquent la progression de notre culture musicale et si vous avez écouté cet album pendant votre adolescence, je suis sûr que vous voyez de quoi je parle.

Las Vegas

Nous sommes à Las Vegas et c’est aujourd’hui que nous repartons à New York. Les valises sont prêtes dans les chambres et nous descendons pour prendre le breakfast. Ce n’est pas toujours facile de trouver où prendre le petit déj’ dans les pays anglophones, ça finit souvent dans des fastfood par dépit.

Ayant fait le tour de l’hôtel, c’était Mc Donald’s (oui, oui, à l’intérieur de l’hôtel) ou le diner. Nous choisissons le diner et optons pour un brunch, histoire d’être bien calé : omelette pomme de terre, bacon, cheddar, champignons, saucisses, toasts and jam. Perfect brunch in Vegas !

Mercredi soir, je suis allé voir Wolfmother en concert au Trabendo. J’y suis allé parce qu’Olivier avait une place VIP en trop, obtenue par un ami photographe à lui. Bien cool de sa part !

Première partie : The Hall Effect

Nous sommes arrivés dans la salle alors que leur dernier accord résonnait. The Hall Effect – groupe indie colombien qui chante en anglais – sonne pourtant bien si l’on en juge leurs titres sur MySpace.

Leur bassiste ressemble pas mal à Lemmy Kilmister de Motörhead, je trouve cela rigolo.

Wolfmother

Concert court (1h15 en tout) mais très bon : j’ai trouvé le son excellent, le groupe bouge vraiment bien sur scène et nous nous sommes régalés.

Les influences sont perceptibles immédiatement : quelques accords ici qui sonnent comme les Rolling Stones, d’autres accords clairs à la Led Zeppelin, un phrasé à la Black Sabbath là-bas, la voix du chanteur qui s’apparente à celle de Jack White des White Stripes… pas à dire, on sait à peu près à quoi ils ont été nourris !

Hier soir, je suis allé voir Joe Bonamassa au New Morning, dans le Xème arrondissement de Paris.

Ce n’est pas loin de la Gare du Nord, à l’arrêt Château d’eau sur la ligne 4.

Le New Morning

Encore une nouvelle salle pour moi ! La salle est petite et bondée quand je suis arrivé. La disposition ressemble un peu à celle du Trabendo mais il y a en plus un bar avec des tables de bar donc si on arrive en premier, on peut assister au concert assis.

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group consisted of vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham.

With a heavy, guitar-driven sound, they are cited as one of the progenitors of hard rock and heavy metal, although their style drew from a variety of influences, including blues and folk music. Led Zeppelin have been credited as significantly impacting the nature of the music industry, particularly in the development of album-oriented rock (AOR) and stadium rock.

Originally named the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin’s deal with Atlantic Records gave them considerable artistic freedom. Initially unpopular with critics, they achieved significant commercial success with eight studio albums over ten years.

Their 1969 debut, Led Zeppelin, was a top-ten album in several countries and featured such tracks as “Good Times Bad Times”, “Dazed and Confused” and “Communication Breakdown”. Led Zeppelin II (1969) was their first number-one album, and yielded “Ramble On” and “Whole Lotta Love”.

In 1970 they released Led Zeppelin III which featured “Immigrant Song”. Their untitled fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV (1971), is one of the best-selling albums in history with 37 million copies sold. The album includes “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll” and “Stairway to Heaven”, with the latter being among the most popular and influential works in rock history. Houses of the Holy (1973) yielded “The Ocean”, “Over the Hills and Far Away” and “The Rain Song”. Physical Graffiti (1975), a double album, featured “Trampled Under Foot” and “Kashmir”.

Page wrote most of Led Zeppelin’s music, particularly early in their career, while Plant wrote most of the lyrics. Jones’s keyboard-based compositions later became central to their music, which featured increasing experimentation. The latter half of their career saw a series of record-breaking tours that earned the group a reputation for excess and debauchery.

Although they remained commercially and critically successful, their touring and output, which included Presence (1976) and In Through the Out Door (1979), grew limited, and the group disbanded following Bonham’s death in 1980. Since then the surviving former members sporadically collaborated and participated in one-off reunions. The most successful of these was the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London, with Bonham’s son Jason Bonham on drums.

Led Zeppelin are one of the best-selling music artists of all time; their total record sales are estimated to be between 200 to 300 million units worldwide. They achieved eight consecutive UK number-one albums and six number-one albums on the US Billboard 200, with five of their albums certified Diamond in the US.

Rolling Stone magazine described them as “the heaviest band of all time”, “the biggest band of the Seventies”, and “unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history”. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995; the museum’s biography of the band states that they were “as influential” during the 1970s as the Beatles were during the 1960s.
