PERFORMANCE NOTES

1.   For this song, Alex utilizes a chorused guitar sound with lots of echo
     to fill up space; it sounds as though he's playing in the middle
     of an empty warehouse.  His tone is primarily treble and bass with
     a de-emphasis on mid-range; this helps the chords to sound clear,
     while making the heavy parts rumble.  The guitar switches to a clean,
     chorused sound in the chorus sections.

2.   There is a lot of tremolo bar used in this song to add slow vibrato to the
     sustained chords.  Attempting to notate all of it would simply bog
     down the transcription, so listen to the studio recording to pick up
     all the nuances.

3.   The guitar fill at 1:46 is insane.  The best approximation that I can
     come up with is to rake the upper strings of the B7sus4 chord, catching
     as many artifical harmonics as possible.  The second chord fragment is
     slid into by quickly dipping and releasing the tremolo bar.  (Alex may
     play like a maniac, but he's a maniac with finesse.)

4.   The guitar riffs leading into and out of the solo section sound a lot more
     difficult than they actually are, once you get the hang of it; the trick
     is to keep the notes sustaining as you slide up the neck.  The guitar
     part leading into the solo is played with a clean sound and a straight,
     eighth-note alternating picking pattern.  During the guitar part leading
     out of the solo, pay close attention to the notes that are sustained
     as you slide into new notes.

5.   This guitar solo is Alex Lifeson at his wackiest, with lots of pinched,
     artifical harmonics, whammy bar dive bombs and out-of-time phrasing.
     The solo is basically played in a B pentatonic scale (B, D, E, F#, A)
     except for the G# at bar 5 and a few notes borrowed from the B minor scale
     (as well as a few chromatics) thrown into the ascending phrase at the end.

6.   To catch all the artifical harmonics means having to pick some of these
     lines using mostly downstrokes -- no easy feat when you consider how
     quickly the song is moving along.  (I don't know about anyone else,
     but I'm having a heck of time with the phrasing at bars 5-6 of the solo;
     it sounds cool, though.)

7.   During the final chorus section, the clean guitar is joined by a heavy
     guitar which plays power chords of the basic progression - C#, F#, E,
     A, B, C#, F#, D.
